Running USA Improves Running Industry Data Reporting Process

National trade organization for the sport of road running announces new methodology for upcoming statistical releases, with support of industry’s registration companies

DETROIT, Mich. (June 15, 2018) - Since its inception as a non-profit organization, Running USA has been a resource for information about the sport of road running, collecting and distributing statistics that measure road race participation around the United States each year.

This data is used by businesses in the industry, as well as media outlets, academics, and the public. It measures participation trends, upticks and downturns in running popularity and provides a comprehensive perspective on the sport’s long-term success.

Running USA has had multiple sources and methods for collecting runner data points over the last 16 years, and endeavors to present the most comprehensive and holistic statistics possible as part of its mission as an organization.

A new methodology for collecting road race data has been used for the upcoming release of summary reports on the 2017 running year. It will enable the presentation of a broader, better picture of the health of the sport by sharing registration totals rather than participants who crossed a finish line.

“We want to report the most reliable information available,” said Running USA CEO Rich Harshbarger. “Providing a truly comprehensive view of the interest and support for running events of all sizes and types is our goal.

“This new methodology broadens the reporting base of vested participants in the running industry for the most accurate portrayal. Races typically see a 10-15 percent attrition rate between those who sign up to run and those who show up on race day.”

The reports will be released beginning in July. The changes will result in some statistics previously issued no longer being available, but will allow the expansion of other types of valuable industry reporting.

For the 2017 calendar year, with the help of registration companies, major race producers, and individual races, Running USA has created a customized process to collect information and summarize recent data trends.

The following registration companies who have participated in the consortium to date: ACTIVE Network, imATHLETE, RunSignUp and Race Roster. Running USA thanks them for their support and willingness to participate this process, which helps the road running industry as a whole.

“This is a highly competitive business, and these companies are willing to come together and participate in this process to better the industry as a whole. For that we are extremely grateful,” Harshbarger said.

Additional registration numbers are still being accepted. If your event or company is interested in joining this consortium or contributing to this process, please contact Running USA research director Jason Jacobson at Jason@RunningUSA.org directly.
